Club President

Patrick Beaudry, a resident of Leavenworth, Kansas, is an avid chess player. Patrick played in the 1999 National Scholastic Chess Tournament, was a former vice president of the University of North Dakota Chess Club, and was a recreational player for some 26 years. Patrick recently started playing in tournaments in 2025, competing in the Kansas Class State Tournament, the Kansas Open, the Topeka Open, the 125th Annual US Chess Open, and many, many more. Regular Play

Our club offers regular opportunities for members of varying levels to play on a weekly basis. Now that we have a permanent location at KCKCC Pioneer Annex in Leavenworth we meet nearly every Thursday for 2-2 and a Half Hours from 6:00-8:30 PM.

Community Events

Members who want to support the chess club or promote chess in the community can also sign up to help with the Kansas Chess Association fundraiser at the Renaissance Festival.

Tournaments

We aim to host at least 6 chess tournaments per year (3 free of charge for entry, 3 with a small entry fee) in the city of Leavenworth. All tournaments are rated, and they will require membership in the US Chess Federation. We can process your membership through the club directly. Over-the-board free tournaments also require membership with the Kansas Chess Association.

First City Chess Knight’s Academy

Chess is for all ages. We have scholastic players, and have setup a Class on LiChess Dedicated for Scholastic Player Growth. If you have a School Age (K-12) player and are looking for a place to meet we would love to have you. This initiative focuses on teaching chess in a fun and engaging way for kids. Children are welcome at First City Chess, but First City Chess Knight’s Academy is exclusively designed for them and the parents and adults who are there to help coach them.

At this time we do not have any active coaches, but we can help link you up with an individual chess coach if you want private instruction.
